Sabrina Carpenter put on quite the show at MTV’s Video Music Awards last night and had everyone – including Britney Spears herself – talking about one moment in particular.

Weeks after her steamy Jenna Ortega kiss the Espresso star, 25, made a flying entrance to the stage for her medley performance, as she sat on a swing which appeared from the ceiling.

Looking the epitome of composure, the popstar wore a glittering bodysuit for the big performance, as her blonde hair with those iconic bangs completed the look.

Starting the medley with Please, Please, Please, Sabrina quickly slipped into her other hit Taste as astronauts appeared alongside a very realistic – if aliens can be realistic – extraterrestrial being.

The dancer had a full-on alien face and was blue from head-to-toe as she danced around in a skimpy pale dress.

Sabrina sang as the astronaut and alien proceeded to smooch and fondle beside her in a pretty X-rated moment, before the star leapt up and shoved the astronaut away and snogged the alien herself.

And no one was more confused by the shocking visual than the Toxic hitmaker, who Sabrina paid homage to in her VMAs performance after playing her Mars-based speech in her Oops I Did It Again… music video.

Britney, however, took to social media to give her own suggestion for exactly who Sabrina should have been snogging.

‘Why is she kissing an alien on stage? I adore her. I love her to death. I didn’t understand that part. Why didn’t she kiss a girl? Like, that was weird.’

‘Did you guys watch the VMAs? I didn’t watch the VMAs, but I did see stuff on my phone from YouTube of Sabrina Carpenter,’ she said on her Instagram story.

In fact there was no love lost for the entire sequence.

She continued: ‘But I also thought that the whole thing was kind of weird altogether, but after watching that, I took a really long bath.

‘And I actually colour. I’m into colouring right now. I like to colour and I like to trace the pictures and then go back over it… this Sabrina girl, she said my name on the red carpet and I thought that was kinda cool, because I forget I’m famous sometimes because I’m a mom, I’m kind of old, blah blah blah.

‘But I thought it was kind of cool, this Sabrina girl, Carpenter. She said something, I was like ‘Thanks, that’s cool!’ She made me cool.’

For others, the unexpected moment was quickly linked to Donald Trump.

In the 2024 US presidential debate on 11 September, Trump said some incredibly outrageous things, including his now-famous lie about immigrants eating people’s cats and dogs.

In another surreal moment, Trump actually accused Democrat candidate Kamala Harris of wanting to do ‘transgender operations on illegal aliens that are in prison’.

Trump’s comments appear to refer to a 2019 American Civil Liberties Union questionnaire filled out by Harris during her first presidential bid, which supported taxpayer-funded medical care for transgender people.

Many VMAs viewers thought of Trump as Sabrina made out with the alien, as Taylor Swift fan account @swifferstruggle wrote: ‘SABRINA CARPENTER JUST KISSED THE ILLEGAL ALIEN AFTER FROM THE TRANSGENDER OPERATION!!’

@giannawhat quipped: ‘THE TRANSGENDER ALIENS GOT SABRINA CARPENTER???????’

‘I can’t believe Sabrina Carpenter made out with an illegal alien after their transgender operation, what a queen,’ joked @Cephalopolis_.

Meanwhile @SoLongLiz added: ‘An illegal, transgender alien has taken the VMAs stage with Sabrina Carpenter.’

Sabrina went on to finish her performance with the official song of the summer, Espresso and the crowd went wild.

Elsewhere, Sabrina got her first VMA award for song of the year for Espresso, while Chappell Roan also got her first major award for best new artist.

Taylor Swift – naturally – was the biggest winner of the night as she took home seven awards to become the most-awarded solo artist in VMA history.

She heaped praise on her boyfriend, NFL star Travis Kelce, as she accepted the video of the year award for Fortnight, and said: ‘And you know, the thing is that this video seems very sad when you watch it, but it was like the most fun video to make.

‘Something I will always remember is that when I would finish a take and I would say cut and we’d be done with the take I would always just hear someone cheering and like woo from across the studio where we were shooting it and that one person was my boyfriend Travis.’

The Getaway Car hitmaker won artist of the year, best collaboration for Fortnight with Post Malone, and best pop.

On the red carpet before the night had even kicked off there was some fiery drama in the form of Chappell, who swore back at a photographer who told her to shut up.

Her performance of Good Luck, Babe was every bit as iconic as Sabrina’s medley, as the star literally set fire to the stage for the moment.
